About us

Opening up music to young disabled musicians

Our team

The development of the Clarion has been a collaborative effort. We’ve refined it over the past ten years working alongside young disabled musicians, music teachers and Music Hubs.

Open Up Music

The Clarion is a programme of UK based charity Open Up Music.

We also run Open Orchestras – the UK’s largest community of inclusive ensembles in special schools, and the National Open Youth Orchestra – the world’s first disabled-led national youth ensemble, where brilliant young disabled and non-disabled musicians perform together on acoustic, electronic and accessible instruments.

Our ambition is to make the Clarion a professional grade orchestral instrument, comparable in its range to traditional instruments.

The Clarion has come a long way (read about its early days), and there are exciting new features in the pipeline!

Watch this video of our patron Clarence Adoo MBE, who plays the Headspace, and Clarion player Alessandro Vazzana, to understand why it’s important we develop an instrument worthy of disabled musicians’ passion and skill.

Paul Masri-Stone

Paul is the creative technologist behind the Clarion’s behaviour, visual design and playability. He leads the technical architecture, sound engine and cross-platform development, working closely with us to shape the Clarion, from the outset, as an instrument for musical expression.

“It is a privilege to work with Open Up Music on this amazing instrument and a delight to see how these young musicians bring it to life.”

Diversity

We bring about greater diversity by driving musical inclusion and disabled representation.

Creativity

We engage audiences through exciting music, made and shared in creative ways.

We support communities of individuals and organisations to make positive change happen.

Our funding

The development of the Clarion wouldn’t be possible without the generous support we receive from trusts and foundations and our corporate funders. We can’t thank them enough.
