Watch National Open Youth Orchestra player Alessandro Vazzana play a fragment of ‘Soaring through Sparks’ by Michael Betteridge with a head tracker (ABRSM film)…
Welcome
Be creative with music
The Clarion® is a game-changing musical instrument that’s expressive like traditional instruments but also highly accessible. It’s the instrument of choice for thousands of players with access needs, including National Open Youth Orchestra and Open Orchestras musicians.
It also opens up music making to anyone who doesn’t read music, and is a brilliant tool for therapeutic self-expression.

Why the Clarion?
An instrument truly accessible, digital and inclusive
We’ve refined the Clarion over the past ten years alongside young disabled musicians, music teachers and Music Hubs. Like all great instruments, it’s fun to play on your own but even better to play with others.
The Clarion has successfully powered the creation of inclusive ensembles in England and Wales because it works in demanding educational settings, within a broad instrumental mix.
Young musicians love the sound choices and control it gives them, the colourful screens and the intuitive playing experience. Music teachers also highly rate the fact it’s simple and quick to set up – as well as being highly expressive and customisable for each musician.
Endless possibilities

… Then watch how the same fragment can be played with a hand. The Clarion can also be played with eye movement using Eyegaze.
Key features
Make the Clarion your own
Customise it in so many ways. Notes, which are represented on screen by different coloured shapes can be adapted to your preferences, including their position on screen for ease of playing. Choose between 13 high-quality instrument sounds to play.
Compose your own musical patterns. You don’t have to read notation to use the Clarion but you can follow a score if you want. Many Clarion users play by ear or just play the patterns in any order they like.
Simple to use and quick to set up. You can download the Clarion on your iPads and Windows PC and start playing within 5 minutes… but it will take practice and musicianship to play it well!

Tech for Good
Opening up music
The Clarion is currently being developed by charity Open Up Music for wider release in 2024, so it can be used in more special and mainstream schools, and by musicians of all ages.
We are working with ABRSM on making the Clarion the first ever electronic instrument to be assessed through its Open Music Assessment.
